CBD is a legal compound in Finland as a cosmetic ingredient, but not as a dietary supplement. The legislation is stricter than in many other European countries.
In cosmetics: CBD has been approved in the EU as a cosmetic ingredient since 2021. In Finland, it can be used in cosmetic products, but authorities such as Tukes and the Finnish Food Authority have not clearly defined the status of CBD products, which creates uncertainty in the market.
As a dietary supplement: The sale of CBD as a dietary supplement is prohibited in Finland, even though many EU countries (e.g. Germany, France, Spain, Poland, and the Czech Republic) have already granted it supplement status.
Differences compared to the rest of Europe: Finnish authorities have not granted approval for CBD as a dietary supplement, even though the EU Court of Justice ruled in 2022 that CBD is not a narcotic.

Absolutely! Almost all skin types can benefit from the positive effects of CBD: it is anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, moisturizing and helps in regulating the sebum production. This is particularly helpful in treating acne or eczema. CBD is well-suited for acne-prone skin, individuals with atopic skin, and even those with psoriasis.
CBD helps to protect the skin from the harmful effects of free radicals. This slows down premature skin aging and boosts skin vitality. CBD helps reduce itching and redness, and for example, after shaving or along the bikini line, CBD soothes the pores quickly and without stinging.
The naturally anti-inflammatory CBD effectively repairs small skin injuries and can be used as a first aid treatment for various skin concerns. Its antioxidant properties help aging skin appear more youthful. CBD helps the skin look healthier, more balanced, and more hydrated.
We get asked about this quite often, so we’ve gone through it carefully with our chemist.
The short answer is this: in cosmetics, there is no authority-issued ban or warning against the external use of CBD during pregnancy or breastfeeding. The precautionary principle you often see mentioned online applies specifically to internal use (oils, capsules, edibles). We even have great reviews of Etna being used postpartum!
A few clarifications:
✔ Research data on CBD in cosmetics is still limited, which is why some brands prefer to play it extra safe (especially if they sell ingestible products marketed as “cosmetics”) or interpret the information in a way that supports their own marketing by steering consumers toward their products. That’s completely fine — but it is not based on any official restriction or recommendation.
✔ Studies show that the absorption of CBD from cosmetics into the bloodstream is extremely low — especially since our products are oil-based and not nano- or micro-emulsions, which penetrate deeper into the skin. In cosmetics, the goal is for the product to act locally on the skin. 👍
✔ If products do not come into contact with mucous membranes, systemic absorption is practically nonexistent. Even in Etna and Glisa, the amounts are so low that systemic absorption does not occur.
We have chosen not to add a “not for pregnant/breastfeeding” warning, as it could create the misconception that the products are intended for internal use or that we use micro- or nano-formulated oils.
Of course, everyone should make decisions based on their own comfort level — and if someone wants to be extra cautious, that’s completely okay. But it is also entirely reasonable to continue using these products during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. ☺️

CBD is a relatively new addition to cosmetics, having long suffered from the bad reputation of cannabis. When cannabis was criminalized in the 1960´s, the reputation of hemp was tarnished as well, and even today many people mistakenly believe that CBD causes intoxication. In reality, the intoxicating properties come from marijuana, a different strain within the cannabis family.
Cannabidiol (CBD) is derived from hemp, while the intoxicating effects (THC) come from cannabis. Both plants belong to the hemp family, but they should not be confused with one another. CBD is not a psychoactive compound, and using it externally (or internally) does not cause intoxication.
We want to bring CBD into the spotlight because it is an excellent cosmetic ingredient that can benefit nearly every skin type. In the following, we aim to clarify a) the difference between marijuana and hemp, and b) the benefits of CBD in skincare.

CBD can be used both as a food, supplement and as a cosmetic ingredient, and legislation varies between markets. In other words, in some countries CBD oil is sold for internal use, while in others it is not. However, the EU’s free trade agreement allows for the legal ordering of products between EU countries, so even if CBD cannot be sold for internal use in your country, you can still legally order it from another EU country.

Almost all skin types can benefit from the positive effects of CBD. It is suitable even for sensitive skin, as well as for those with atopic dermatitis or psoriasis. In Finland, atopic skin is especially common, and more and more people require skincare products tailored for sensitive skin.
CBD is particularly beneficial for stressed and irritated skin. It helps reduce itching and redness, and for example, after shaving or along the bikini line, CBD soothes the pores quickly and without stinging.
CBD effectively repairs small skin injuries and can be used as a first aid treatment for various skin concerns. It helps balance sebum production, making it ideal for oily and blemish-prone skin, and is also well-suited for acne-prone skin. Its antioxidant properties help aging skin appear more youthful.

In the world of cosmetics, CBD has become one of the most talked-about ingredients in recent years. However, there is still a lot of confusion around it – especially because the market is full of products advertised as CBD cosmetics, while in fact they only contain hemp seed oil.
Just because a product features a hemp leaf on its label doesn’t automatically mean it contains CBD. CBD is also considerably more valuable as an ingredient than hemp seed oil, so in principle the price of the product can give you a clue. The best way to be sure, however, is to check the ingredient list.
On the INCI list, CBD appears under the term “Cannabidiol – derived from extract or tincture or resin of cannabis” or simply “Cannabidiol”. Hemp seed oil, on the other hand, is listed as "Cannabis Sativa Seed Oil".
Hemp seed oil is obtained by cold-pressing hemp seeds, and it does not contain CBD. When used on the skin, hemp seed oil moisturizes, but it is especially when taken internally that it has been scientifically proven to help with conditions such as eczema and even psoriasis, thanks to its omega fatty acid content. Hemp seed oil makes skin feel hydrated and soft, but it does not contain the active compounds of CBD – meaning its effects are not as versatile.
Hemp seed oil can also be used as-is in cooking, for example in salads and smoothies.
CBD calms and balances the skin while effectively repairing small imperfections. Its anti-inflammatory properties are particularly helpful for those with atopic or psoriatic skin. CBD also regulates sebum production, which makes it suitable for oily, impure skin and acne-prone skin.
Its antioxidant effects help aging skin appear more youthful: cannabidiol supports skin that looks healthier, more balanced, and well-hydrated.
CBD is suitable for stressed, sensitive, and oily skin alike.
CBD helps with:
soothing irritated and stressed skin
reducing itchiness and redness, for example after shaving
repairing minor skin damage
balancing sebum production, which benefits acne-prone skin
fighting free radicals thanks to its antioxidant properties, helping skin maintain a youthful appearance

Our natural cosmetic products are built around CBD derived from European hemp. The hemp we use is grown without chemical pesticides in Croatia. Our CBD expert, Miro Koliseva, has spent years evaluating producers across Europe, and we've partnered with a supplier recognized for delivering some of the highest-quality CBD available on the market.
Although the hemp is grown using organic methods, CBD cannot receive organic certification, since some countries still classify CBD as a drug. Hemp is undoubtedly a plant of the future, with great potential for cultivation also in Finland.

One hectare of hemp captures 9 to 15 tons of carbon dioxide — about the same as a young forest. But while a forest takes 15–20 years to grow, hemp does it in just five months.
Moreover, hemp's carbon storage benefits extend beyond cultivation. Products like hempcrete—a building material made from hemp and lime—continue to store carbon throughout their lifecycle, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional construction materials.
In essence, hemp serves as a powerful tool in the fight against climate change, offering a renewable resource that not only absorbs significant amounts of CO₂ but also contributes to sustainable industries and practices.
Source: EU Comission

Hemp offers significant benefits when included in crop rotation systems, particularly in disease suppression and weed control.
Disease Suppression
Hemp's natural resistance to many pests and diseases makes it an effective break crop. Introducing hemp into a rotation can disrupt the life cycles of soil-borne pathogens, thereby reducing their prevalence and minimizing the need for chemical treatments.
Weed Control
Hemp's rapid growth and dense canopy effectively suppress weed emergence. Once established, hemp shades out competing weeds, reducing their growth and seed production . This natural weed suppression can decrease reliance on herbicides and lower the weed seed bank in the soil, benefiting subsequent crops.
Incorporating hemp into crop rotations not only enhances soil health but also contributes to more sustainable and resilient agricultural practices.
Sources: EU Commission & New Phase Blends & Frontiers & Rodale Institute

The dense growth of hemp forms a natural ground cover, reducing water evaporation and protecting the soil from erosion. A hemp crop can cover the ground surface within three weeks of germination.
Industrial hemp is notably water-efficient and typically does not require blue water—meaning irrigation from surface or groundwater sources—especially when grown in regions with sufficient rainfall. Studies have shown that hemp can thrive without irrigation, and additional watering does not necessarily increase biomass or yield.
Source: EU Commission & University of Twente

Hemp typically flowers from July to September, when there is less pollen from other crops. It produces a lot of pollen and provides shelter for birds. Hemp seeds are a food source for many animals.
Little to no need for pesticides: Hemp has few natural pests, which means that pesticide use—including insecticides, herbicides, and fungicides—can often be avoided in its cultivation.

Everyone knows hemp, but the fact that CBD is derived from hemp is still new to many — and even fewer people know what hemp actually looks like growing in a field. Last week, we visited a Finnish hemp farm to collect material for a studio shoot. And even though the CBD used in our cosmetic products is sourced from Croatia, we wanted to film a video for you in a Finnish hemp field, because hemp cultivation looks pretty much the same in Finland as it does in Croatia. Swipe down and watch the video.
Hemp is one of the oldest cultivated plants, with numerous varieties. In Finland, both oil and fiber hemp are grown, and CBD can be extracted from both. However, industrial-scale CBD extraction is not yet taking place in Finland. We would be happy to use domestically produced CBD in our products if it were available, but for now, we source our CBD from Croatia, where we have found a highly reliable and high-quality raw material supplier. That said, large-scale CBD production could thrive in Finland, as the growing conditions here are ideal for hemp cultivation.
Not only is our climate well-suited for hemp, but hemp also benefits the climate itself. It is seen as a promising solution in the fight against climate change: hemp improves soil health, requires no pesticides, and is an excellent carbon sink. In one year, hemp can sequester as much carbon as a 10-year-old forest — all without the need for chemical inputs. Around midsummer, hemp grows at its fastest, adding up to 10 centimeters in height per day!
As a crop, hemp is highly ecological and also one of the most versatile and sustainable sources of protein.
A complete source of protein: Hemp seeds contain all nine essential amino acids that the human body cannot produce on its own. The protein content is high, approximately 25–30%.
Rich in healthy fats: Hemp seeds are packed with omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, particularly linoleic acid (LA) and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), which are important for heart and brain health. The ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 is ideal (around 3:1), which is optimal for preventing inflammation.
High in fiber and gluten-free: Whole hemp seeds contain a significant amount of both soluble and insoluble fiber, which supports gut health, stabilizes blood sugar, and helps manage cholesterol levels.
Packed with vitamins and minerals: Hemp contains vitamin E (an antioxidant), magnesium (for muscle and nerve function), phosphorus, iron, zinc, potassium, and B vitamins.
Highly versatile: Hemp seeds can be added to porridge, smoothies, or sprinkled on salads. Hemp seed flour can be used in baking or as a protein supplement. Hemp seed oil is perfect for salad dressings. Hemp protein powders and plant-based hemp drinks are also available.
As a raw material in cosmetics and as a food ingredient, hemp is excellent — but it can be used for much more: textile fibers, building materials, paper, biocomposites, furniture, fiberglass, soil, growing mediums, fuel... As one headline puts it: “Hemp — the forgotten superplant that could revolutionize agriculture.”
So why hasn’t that revolution happened yet? Why isn’t hemp Finland’s next Nokia?
What’s slowing hemp’s rise to stardom are mostly outdated and skeptical perceptions. Hemp is often associated with intoxication, even though industrial hemp is non-intoxicating (i.e., it contains only trace amounts of THC). Legislation has long been restrictive, and while industrial hemp is now legal to cultivate in many countries (including Finland), it still involves licensing procedures, monitoring, and bureaucracy — all of which deter farmers. In addition, processing and refining hemp requires specialized equipment. Finland currently lacks the infrastructure needed for large-scale hemp processing, and logistics and value chains are not yet developed in the same way as they are for grains or oil crops.
Still, the future of hemp looks bright. As climate change, sustainability, and regenerative agriculture become increasingly important, interest in hemp continues to grow. Consumers are showing rising interest in hemp oil, hemp protein, hemp textiles, and biocomposites.
And what about cannabidiol (CBD)? In 2024, the CBD market in Europe reached approximately €2.11 billion (Statista), and by 2029, it's projected to grow to €2.23 billion. We have ideal growing conditions for this sustainable crop, and there’s already a ready and growing market in Europe — so what are we waiting for?
